Hide AdAs injuries and fatigue take its toll, we could see some clubs move for free agents as a way to bulk up their squads and add strength in depth.
Tony Mowbray has even admitted that the club looked at the free agent market in the wake of injuries to Ellis Simms and Ross Stewart as they searched for ways to bolster their attacking options.
Here, we take a look at six players released by Championship sides this summer that remain free agents:
Izzy Brown
Brown was released by Preston this summer having failed to nail-down a spot in Ryan Lowe’s squad. Brown came through the Chelsea academy and is undoubtedly talented but remains a free agent.

Simpson was released by Bristol City in March having spent just less than a year at Ashton Gate. The former Premier League winner remains without a club after a very successful 17-year career as a professional.
Sol Bamba
Neil Warnock’s trusted defender played an important role at Middlesbrough before his release this summer. Bamba has represented the likes of Cardiff City, Leeds United and Leicester City during his time in England.
Grant Ward
The 27-year-old is currently nursing achilles tendon issues that blighted him throughout last season with the midfielder only being able to make four league appearances for Blackpool last year. There is hope that Ward can regain fitness and get back to playing regular first-team football.
Sammy Ameobi
The former Newcastle United man was released by Middlesbrough earlier this summer having failed to feature for the club after joining in summer 2021 from Nottingham Forest.
