Sunderland boss explains his main referee frustration after defeat - and it wasn't penalty claim

Tony Mowbray questioned the consistency of PGMOL's new directives after Sunderland's 1-0 defeat to Leicester City.

Sunderland were denied what looked like a very strong claim for a penalty on the stroke of half time when Wout Faes brought Dan Neil down inside the box, but Mowbray opted to keep his counsel after a number of contentious decisions in recent weeks.

His main frustrating was that just five minutes were added on at the end of the game, despite a number of players requiring treatment in the second half and both sides using their full allocation of substitutions.

A new method of determining added time was implemented ahead of the new campaign to tackle timewasting and boost ball-in-play time, but the impact has lessened as the season has progressed.

Mowbray says he doesn't feel anyone quite knows where they stand.

"I don't know, I don't want to moan about referees again," said of the Neil penalty claim.

"I'll let people watch that back and decide [whether it was a penalty]. If I'm honest, what I'm more interested in is how on earth we had five minutes added on at the end. All those subs, all the times the physio was on the pitch...

"The same guy out 13 minutes up on the first day of the season when we played Ipswich Town. You stand there and wonder. It baffles me, and I don't think there's any consistency.

"It's frustrating, but we just have to get on the game."

Sunderland return to action against Norwich City at the Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon.
